2000
was another amazing year of WoRLd jAZz!
We had the remarkable talents of:
Ali Jihad Racy - 'ud, nay
Steve Loza - trumpet
Cheryl Keyes - piano
Roberto Miranda - bass
Brana Mijatovic - drums
Chris Garcia - percussion
Jack Bishop - acoustic guitar, berimbau, cavaquinho, vocals
David Green - electric guitar
Jordan Miller - trumpet, flugelhorn, violin
Vicente Contreras - tenor sax
Adam Reese - violin
Alejandro Flores - vocals
The
concert on May 19, 2000 in UCLA's Schoenberg Hall
was very well received as the WJO ran through their
repertoire of eclectic arrangements. One of the band's
hallmarks is the unusual instrumentation and arrangement
of the compositions. The WJO regularly adapt and fuse
a variety of musical styles from around the world into
one arrangement. After performing several originals written
by band members and a Jobim medley, the WJO yielded the
stage to Jihad Racy's Near Eastern Ensemble, which is
actually an orchestra in every sense of the word. They
delivered a stellar show then invited members of the WJO
back on stage to collaborate on the final two songs of the evening.
